Description
Located on the NH-MA boundary, 21 mi NE of Lowell; Essex County (US-T121).
History
Settled 1638, incorporated as a town in 1876. Named for the Merrimack River on which it is located. In the Indian language it meant 'place of strong current' (MA-T1). Indian word means 'sound of the falls' (US-T121)
