Description

Located 10 mi S of Taunton (US-T121).

History

Settled in 1677 and incorporated in 1790. Took its name from the village known by that name since 1677 and probably so named because the early settlers came from Somerset, England. Local tradition, however, states that it was named for Somerset Square, Boston, the birthplance of the wife of Colonel Jarathural Bowers, who was active in having the town seperated from Swansea. Before 1790, it was that part of Swansea called Shewamet Purchase (MA-T1).
