History

Settled in 1669 and incorporated in 1711. Origin of the name is uncertain. It may have been named for the Reverend John Norton, who preached at Plymouth. Other theories are that it was named for the town in England which bears the same northerly relation to Taunton, England, as this town does to Taunton, MA (MA-T1).
