History
Settled in 1638 and incorporated in 1735. Probably named for Dean Berkeley, resident from 1729-1731, who was made Bishop of Cloyne in 1733. Another theory is that the name was given by a local family, the Bruts, in memory of their alliance in England with the Berkleys, James and William, who had emigrated to VA and the Carolinas (MA-T1).
