History
Assateague Island is named for the Indian tribe which once inhabited the area centuries ago. Assateague reportedly means "stony river" although today this area is virtually devoid of any rocky soil and is typically a sandy coastal environment. The island contains a wildlife refuge, the Assateague Island National Seashore and the famous "wild ponies" that swim annually across Assateague Bay to Chincoteague. (VA-T2/p8)
