Description
Located in the northern portion of the Chesapeake Bay, 1.9 km (1.2 mi) off the southeast shore of Gunpowder Neck and 31 km (19 mi) east of downtown Baltimore.
History
Explorer John Smith named this island for one of his crew members, Nathaniel Powell but the name has been corrupted over the years to Pooles Island. Today Pooles Island is part of the US Army's Aberdeen Proving Ground facility, and is not open to the public due to unexploded ordinance. (US-T121)
