History
Origin of name appears to have come from the name of the Chapman farm, because of its terrain it was originally called "Le Plateau", which is the french designation for a large, flat area. As time passed the residents of Charles County corrupted the spelling and the pronunciation until it became La Plata with the long a sound used today.
