History

It is believed that the name of this island dates to the 1600s, although exactly which form of the name is unknown. At different times the feature has been both one and two islands. The Hart family owned the islands during the 1820s. In the 1970s, when they were separate islands, the Maryland Port Administration proposed connecting the islands and building the current oval dike. This 1,100-acre impoundment is for sediments dredged from Chesapeake Bay shipping channels. The inflow of material began in 1983 and is to be continued until 2009. (US-T121).
