Description
Located in eastern Kentucky, along the boundary with West Virginia, about 130 km (80 mi) east of Lexington; County Seat: Louisa.
History
Established in 1821, named for Captain James Lawrence (1781-1813) of the USS Chesapeake who died in battle while fighting against the British off the coast of Boston. He is famous for the words "Don't give up the ship" as he lay dying from his battle wounds. (KY-T1/p167)
