Description

Located in southwestern Kentucky, along the Mississippi River and the boundary with Missouir, about 32 km (20 mi) southwest of Paducah; County Seat: Bardwell.

History

Established in 1886, named for John Griffin Carlisle (1835-1910). He represented Kentucky in the US Congress from 1877 to 1891, and served as Speaker of the House for 6 of those years. Served in the US Sentate, and as President Grover Cleveland's Secretary of the Treasury. (KY-T1/p50)
