Description

Town on Pend Oreille River, 0.75 mi NE of Sawyer and 13 mi SW of Sandpoint; in Kaniksu NF.

History

One of the earliest settlements in the county, first begun as a Hudsons Bay Company trading post. It was for a short time the county seat of Kootenai County in 1864. The name is derived from the Indian "crossing of the waters" and refers toan early river crossing at that point.
