Located in south central Georgia along the boundary with Florida; County Seat: Valdosta.
History
Formed from a portion of Irwin County on 23 December 1825. Named in honor of William Jones Lowndes (1782-1833), a prominent South Carolina Statesman who was important to the stability and development of South Carolina during and after the Revolutionary War. (GA-T21/p137-8)
