Located in northeastern Georgia, 39 km (24 mi) west northwest of Athens; County Seat: Elberton.
History
Established 1790, named in honor of General Samuel Elbert (1740-1788), from South Carolina who served in the Revolutionary War and who became Governor of Georgia in 1785. (GA-T21/p71)
