Description

Located in northwestern Georgia, 29 km (18 mi) southwest of Atlanta; County Seat: Douglasville.

History

Established 17 October 1870. Douglas County was orginally settled prior to 1848 by Abe, Reuben, and Young Vansant, brothers who came from South Carolina. Named in honor of Stephen Arnold Douglas (1813-1861), US Congressman originally from Vermont, who became a Presidential candidate and was defeated by Abraham Lincoln in 1860. (GA-T21/p65)
