Description

Extending southward from the Halifax River and separated from the Atlantic Ocean by a narrow barrier reef, it is connected with the Indian River on the west through Haulover Canal.

History

Indian River Lagoon is a state legislated name in May 1951, Senate Bill No. 132. In May 2001, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (USBGN) approved the name Indian River Lagoon. This feature encompasses the following 10 features: Mosquito Lagoon, Banana River, Indian River Narrows, Great Pocket, Peck Lake, South Jupiter Narrows, Hobe Sound, Jupiter Sound, Indian River North, and Indian River.
