Extends from Ponce de Leon Inlet, south-southeast 251 km (156 mi) to Jupiter Inlet; comprised of the following features: Indian River North, Mosquito Lagoon, Indian River, Banana River, Indian River Narrows, Great Pocket, Peck Lake, South Jupiter Narrows, Hobe Sound, and Jupiter Sound. Located within the Canaveral National Seashore, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge, and Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge. Incomplete record.
This feature was designated a National Estuary by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1990, as part of the National Estuary Program, established by Congress in 1987. It is the subject of a cooperative effort of the Saint Johns River Water Management District, South Florida Water Management District, and the EPA, entitled "The Indian River Lagoon Program."
