History
Built on an Anacostia River site purchased in 1799, the Washington Navy Yard was the U.S. Navy's first yard and first home port center for early 19th-century naval operations during a critical period of expanding nationalism. Torpedoes, submarines and ordnance have been tested here over the years. The yard now contains approximately 35 buildings erected between 1799 and 1920, and contains a naval administration center and the Navy Museum
