Name probably originates from "Scantuck," an Indian word, or possibly from "scantiness," as in summer the water is scanty (Bagg 1922) (Steele). Name recorded as River Skentooke on 1636 Indian deed. Possibly Nipmuck dialect for "branch of the river" (CT-T123)
