History
Named for Otto Mears, early pioneer in the San Luis Valley and interpreter-negotiater for early Indian treaties, developer of roads, railroads and mining and milling operations in the San Juan region where there is a Mears Peak; a Russion-Jewish immigrant who learned the Ute language.
