Heads at the junction of North Fork Pit River and South Fork Pit River, south of Alturas, trends west-southwest through the Pit River Arm to join the Sacramento River Arm in Shasta Lake. (US-T121)

Named because the Indians dug pits upon its banks to catch men and animals.
