A proposal to change the name Bear Creek Spire to Popsicle Peak was submitted in September 1980 by a private citizen; the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (USBGN) rejected the proposal on 11 June 1981 based upon the recommendation of the California Board which disapproved the name because the feature is located within the John Muir Wilderness.
