History
'Walpi' is a Hopi Indian name meaning 'place of the notch (pass)' which was applied to the community built after 1680 (US-T121). The place was published as 'Gaspe' in 1583, 'Gualpi' in 1782, 'Hualpee' in 1875 and 'Gualpi' in 1915 (AZ-T101/p. 658).
