Description

Trends SW-NW to Canyon Lake on Salt River.

History

Name derived from Fish Creek which flows through it. The canyon was earlier called 'Box Canyon' because of its boxlike shape. In 1917, Prof. Aubrey Drury (Southern Pacific Railroad), proposed the name 'Barranca Grande' (Spanish for 'great ravine') for advertising purposes. The new name was approved, but the following year, 1918, the name 'Fish Creek Canyon' was approved (US-T121, AZ-T101/p. 236).
