History
The name, 'Moenkopi', (Hopi Indian word for 'place of running water')was named for the springs located here. The village was established in the 1870's at or near the location of 'Rancherio de los Guadelas' of Juan de Onate (1604) and 'Concave' to Father Francisco de Garces (1776). An 1891 map shows 'Tenehleto Spring, known now as 'Muencovi' (AZ-T101/p.413).
