Description
'LeConte Plateau' is above the left wall of Granite Gorge
History
"In 1908 the USGS proposed this name as submitted by Dr. Arnold Guyot to honor Professor Joseph Le Conte, a geologist who took observations with a stationary barometer for Guyot while exploring this locality." (Byrd Howell Granger: "Arizona's Names"/p. 356). Historical records, however, do not suggest that either Guyot or Le Conte did any mapping work in the Grand Canyon.
