named in 1930 by Robert Marshall for Lieutenant General Henry Tureman Allen (1859-1930), USA, "the first white man to penetrate north of the Arctic Circle in the Koyukuk drainage. chosen) would seem an especially appropriate feature * * * because his most northerly point * * * reached was on the drainage of the John River less than thirty miles below the mouth of the proposed Allen River."
