Description

In Tongass National Forest, W end of Phipps Peninsula flows from Ankau Saltchucks E to S side of Monti Bay approximately 3 mi W of Yakutat, Amalspina Coastal Plain. 0.6 mile long.

History

Named "Estero del Ancau" by Captain Alessandro Malaspina, in 1791, after a Tlinkit Indian chief named Ancau (Galiano, 1802, map 8). According to dixon (1789, p. 172), "Ancau" means "chief" or "friend." Marcus Baker reversed the two names "Tawah" and "Ankau" in his Geographic Dictionary.
