Named in 1904 by E. F. Dickins, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS), "at request of President of Great American Marble Company whose quarry is on the island ***. This island was discovered by R. L. Fox which he earlier named after himself before being surveyed (sic)."
