History
Name published by W. H. Dall U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS), in the 1883 Coast Pilot (p. 97). This feature was named for Captain John Meares, Royal Navy (RN), who visited this vicinity in 1788 while on a trading cruise.
