Named "Puerto de la Santissima Cruz," or "Port of the Most Holy Cross" by Lieutenant Artega, on "May 13, 1779, in remembrance of 'the finding of the Cross,' celebrated May 3, the day he reached the Port" (Wagmer. 1937, p. 414).
