Description

Shungnak River is located heads in Schwatka Mts. at 671600N1562500W, flows SW to Kobuk River, 8 mi. NW of Shungnak, Kotzebue-Kobuk Low.

History

Eskimo name, meaning "jade," written "Shung-nack" by Lieutenant G. M. Stoney, U.S. Navy (USN), in 1885, and "Shingnek" by W. C. Mendenhall, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in 1901. Jade is found near its headwaters. See Jade Mountain.
