Local name published in 1900 by US@C&GS on Chart 9380. Name commemorates Rear Admiral William Thomas Sampson, 1840-1902, U.S. Navy (USN), who, during the Spanish-American War, had active command of various functions including the investigation of the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine.
