History
Name reported in 1866 by W. H. Dall as "Golsova" and E. W. Nelson, U.S. Signal Service spelled the name "Goltzovaia" which Baker (1906, p. 280), suggests may come from the German "holtz" meaning "wood." Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 2), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), records the Eskimo name "Nygvilnuk (Nigvilnuk)." See Golsova.
