History

Local name published in 1900 on U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) Chart 9380. Named in 1899 or 1900, possibly for Commodore (later Admiral) George Dewey, 1837-1917, U.S. Navy (USN), who successfully commanded the United States forces in the Battle of Manila Bay on May 1, 1898.
