Name published as "Yess Bay" in the 11th Census in 1890 (1893, p. 23); derived from the Tlingit Indian word "yas" meaning "mussel." was called "Mcdonald Bay" in 1879 by W. H. Dall, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS).
