Description
Ismailof Island is located at entrance to Halibut Cove, on E shore of Kachemak Bay, 11 mi. ESE of Homer, Chugach Mts. 1.4 miles long.
History
Named in 1880 by W. H. Dall, for Gerassiim Grigorovich Ismailov, Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), who made explorations in Alaska in the late 18th century. His name was spelled "Erasim Gregorieoff Sin Ismyloff" in 1788 by Captain James Cook, RN; Captain George Vancouver (1798, v. 3, p. 192), RN, called him "Mr. Smyloff."
