History
Native name published by Lieutenant Sarichev (1826, map 3), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), as "Os(strov) Morzhevoi (Russian for 'Walrus Island') Shayak." Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 4), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), showed "O(strov) Shayak." The Shaiak spelling is due to the transliteration table used by Board on Geographic Names (BGN) in the 1890's.
