The Eskimo name was published as "Os(trov) Shiganik" by Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 6), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN). On July 16, 1791 it was called "Isla Dudosa" which he thought might be connected to Kayak Island and hence a peninsula, by Captain Alessandro Malaspina (Wagner, 1937, p. 449).
