Name published by P. S. Smith and A. G. Maddren (in Brooks and others, 1915, pl. 10), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). G. L. Harrington, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in 1919 reported that the Eskimo name of the river was "Kwihcherak," meaning "little river."
