History
Aleut name published as "Ulak ile" or "Ylak Island," by Captain Lutke (1836, p. 323), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), and is apparently of the same derivation as "O(strov) Ulyadak," or "Ulyadak Island," shown on Russian Hydrographic Dept. Chart 1400 in 1848. The Aleut name "Ulaq" means "house."
