Name published by Lieutenant Sarichev (1826, map 3), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), as "Illak," apparently from the Aleut name "Ulak" or "Ulaq," meaning "house" or "everybody's house." The adopted name was published on a U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) chart.
