Description
Semisopochnoi Island is located island, 13 mi. across, northeasternmost of Rat Islands., Aleutian Islands.
History
Descriptive name derived from the Russian words "sem" meaning "seven," and "sopochka," meaning "extinct volcano"--seven volcanoes or seven peaks. Published by Lieutenant G. A. Sarichev (1826, map 3), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), as "O(strov) Semisoposhnoy". It was published as "O(strov) Semisopochnyy" or "Semisopchnyy Island" by Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 29), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN). The island may have been named in 1790 by Lieutenant Sarichev, Imperial Russian Navy (IRN).
