Description
In the Aleutian Islands between the Near Islands to the W and the Andreanof Islands to the E, and extending from Amchitka Pass W to Buldir Island. Includes Semisopochnoi, Amchitka, Rat, Little Sitkin, Segula, Kiska, Buldir Islands and several smaller islands.
History
The name is translated from Russian "krysi" or possibly from the Aleut name "ayugadak," meaning "rat" and was applied by Captain Feodor Petrovich Lutke, Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), who visited the Aleutian Islands in 1827 on a voyage around the world. Lutke (1836, p. 324) called the islands "IIles Kryci (aux rats)," and Baker (1906, p. 521), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), reported thay were "ususally called Krysi or Rat Islands."
