History

This is a translation of a descriptive name first reported in 1827 as "Rocher-en-form-de Colonne," meaning "Rock in the form of a Column," by Admiral A. J. von Krusenstern, commander of the Russian American Company ship Nadezhda. The Russians called it "Vysokiy kamen" meaning "High Rock" on the 1848 Russian Hydrographic Dept. Chart 1400, and "Stolb" meaning "Pillar" (Tebenkov, 1852, map 29).
