Aleut name used by the early Russians. U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), cites W. H. Dall, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS), as giving the meaning as "gut," but Geoghegan (1944, p. 144) gives the word "angig" with that meaning. seen by Vitus Bering on October 25, 1741 (Old Style (O.S.) calendar), and named by him "St. Markiana (St. Makarius)." with Bering's "St. Stephen "
