Description
The easternmost peninsula of Attu Island, Aleutian Islands.
History
Named for Captain Lieutenant Alexie Ilich Chirikov who was in command of the Saint Paul on the official Russian exploring expedition, under Vitus Bering; he is given credit for the discovery of the Alaska mainland in 1741. This cape was called "Mys Vostochnoy" meaning "east cape" (Tebenkov, 1852, map 30). The translated name "East Cape" was used on American charts until the Board on Geographic Names (BGN) decision was given.
