History

Russian name "Sarana" meaning "lily," referring to a kind of fern which grew extensively on Kamchatka and from which liquor was made for Vitus Bering's expedition (Bancroft, 1886, p. 57). The name was reported as "Sarannaia" by Captain Lutke (1836, p. 329), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN).
