Named in 1872 by W. H. Dall, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS), for Bernhard Bendel, a trader in Alaska in 1871-72; published in 1888 on a U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) chart and in a U.S. Bureau of Fisheries (USBF) report. "Morse Island" was shown on an 1891 U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) chart.
