Description
Unimak Island is located island, 67 mi. long and 22 mi. wide, in Fox Islands., Aleutian Islands. 1571.4 square miles in size.
History
Aleut name recorded by Captain Cook (1785, v. 2, p. 426), Royal Navy (RN), July 2, 1778; it is called by the people of these parts "Oonemak, * * *." Esteban Jose Martinez called the island "Don Jose de Flores" in 1788; and Lopez de Haro called it "Isla San Gonzalo" on July 16, 1788, probably derived from his Christian name (Wagner, 1937, p. 500).
