Description
Unga Island is located largest and most important of Shumagin Is., Aleutian Range. 171 square miles in size.
History
Aleut name reported as "Ounga" in 1827 by Admiral A. J. von Krusenstern, Imperial Russian Navy (IRN); in 1840 Veniaminov (v. 1, p. 254), gave the name "O(strov) Unga". Designated a National Natural Landmark in 1968.
